O'Neil targets England call up

Portsmouth and former England under 21 Captain Gary O'Neil who signed a new 5 year contract yesterday is hoping that Pompey's success this season and the change of England manager will help him earn an England call up.

For O'Neil the appointment of Steve Maclaren may help his chances as Middlesbrough had an offer rejected by Pompey earlier this summer.

O'Neil told The News "You always dream.  I played in the under 21s against a few good international sides.  That gave me good experience.  The full squad is a long way off.  First I have to do well here.
"I have to make sure I'm a regular here and score some more goals - and hopefully the rest will look after itself.
"I've got some improving and growing to do before then.  But I like to think its possible."

"The club's moving forward. The start of last year was a bit of hiccup but we seem to be on the right track again now.
"We are trying to sign some more good players which is encouraging.
"Not I'm looking to have my first season in the top half of the Premier League"
"Anything below mid-table will be a disappointment.  We've finished 13th, 16th, 17th.  Its time we made the step forward.
"And once you get into that top half you never know how far you can go.

Again more positive words from a Pompey player, while 17th is still our first target next season its good to see the club aiming higher.  Maclaren may introduce some new blood to the England squad and with a good season O'Neil would deserve a call up, certainly would be good to see a player that has come through the Pompey ranks getting to play for England.
