Stefanovic targets top 10 finish

Portsmouth captain Dejan Stefanovic thinks we can be a top 10 club this season providing we make our mark in the transfer market.

Stefanovic told The News "We can reach the top 10 or reach a semi final of a cup competition or better but it all depends on which players we are going to bring here.

"I said from the beginning of the season we need seven or eight quality players. It doesnt matter which positions but we need a big squad for next season

"If you have a big squad in the Premiership then automatically you are a success, it's as simple as that.
"It's vital, espeically around Christmas time when you've got a lot of injuries and suspended players.
"If you've got a big squad you can change and rest players and this is the most important thing in the Premiership.

"You need two good players in every position if you want to achieve something in the Premiership.
"We've got 22 players here at the moment.  We've got a good squad, but another five players and we have a very good squad for the season ahead.

"A top 10 finish depends on which players we are going to bring in.
"Its too early to say where we will finish but if you add at least five or six quality players to the ones we have already, yes for sure we can do it."

It seems that our captain has more optimistic view of our squad than the manager does, its interesting to hear Dejan talking about the 2 players for every position, a view made popular in the last couple of years by Chelsea however Jose Mourinho seems to be moving away from this as it creates too many unhappy players so perhaps multi positioned players are the answer, but Dejan is right to get the kind of league position a club with the backing Gayadmak has given us would expect does need more quality players, something we are finding very difficult at the moment.

I'm sure he said exactly the same about a top ten finish last year....and look what happened!

Still, I really think we are on our way to being a decent mid-table team now. It's been said before, but until we get a decent stadium (or at least on our way to it) and good training facilities, which appear to both be in the pipeline, we are simply not going to attract the type of quality that will assure a 'top ten finish'.

Here's hoping that Harry can perform his magic again and get us a few steals. One thing is for certain we don't have the strength of depth right now.

If you take Wigan and West Ham last season neither of those had a squad that looked capable of being top 10, we dont have a squad any worse than those, we can acheive with the squad we have.

The belief we had at the end of last season if it can be recreated this season can go along way.

Saying that we do need Harry to work his transfer magic, even if we dont get any quality in we do need the depth.

to be fair Wigan didn't have tragic injury or booking losses and they went downt he toilet at the end of the season.  And you can't say West Ham didn't look like they had a squad cos who new, it was deep but mainly with new untried foreigners and d1 players who he gave a shot... so you just don't know.  What we do know is that Pompey went on a good run with the current squad at the end of last season (minus d'allesandro) but had a poor 3/4 before.  If D'allesandro made us tick we're shafted... if it was something else we'll be okay but wobbly... if we can find someone who takes what might have been viewed as the luck we had in the final run out of the equation we'll be fine.
