  • Redknapp wanted Woodgate on loan

Redknapp today admitted that Jonathan Woodgate was a Pompey target and tried to sign him on loan from Real Madrid.  The 26 year old defender turned down Pompey and his former club Newcastle to join his boyhood club.

"I spoke to Jonathan and tried to convince him to come here." Redknapp told The News

"But he had already made his mind up that he wanted to go to Middlesbrough."

"He turned down Newcastle to move there, so we were always up against it.  But it was worth a try because he's a brilliant player.  I like him a lot."

  • Toddy departure stunned Lualua

Pompey striker Lualua joined fans in admitting he couldn’t believe that Portsmouth had let experienced Bulgarian striker Svetoslav Todorov join Premiership rivals Wigan on loan with a view to a permanent deal when the loan expires in December.

“I didn’t even know about Toddy going – I think only the manager knew about it.” Lualua told The News

“For me personally, I’ve seen him training, he’s a very nice guy and I think he’s the best finisher here.”

“I’m not supposed to say that as a striker but I think Toddy’s a killer in front of goal”

Pompey fans will be hoping that Lualua is back playing again soon after missing the last eight Premiership games since damaging his ankle during Pompey’s 1-1 draw against Arsenal last season, and aggravating it during the pre-season game against Oxford.

Lualua is back in training and may feature against Wigan although this may depend on how new signing Andy Cole is recovering from a calf injury.

  • Redknapp denies being offered Argentine duo

Harry Redknapp has denies claims that Pompey had been offered the Argentine duo Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano, and had he they been offered he would of been interested.

"Tevez and Mascherano were never offered to me.  No-one even mentioned either of them." Redknapp told The News

"Of course I would have been interested.  They're two huge names, but no-one ever came to us about them"

"I bumped into Alan Pardew and his wife last night.  He's well pleased to have Tevez and Mascherano.  The players dropped into his lap."
