Harry in Fernandes plea

Pompey boss Harry Redknapp has made a plea to Benfica to drop their asking price for on loan midfielder Manuel Fernandes.

The Sun are today reporting that Harry is desperate to keep hold of the creative midfielder who was thought to have played his last game for Pompey against Bolton on Saturday, the £12million price tag is thought to be over the top, earlier reports even the player himself things the fee being asked for by Benfica is unrealistic, with Pompey thought to be willing to pay up to around £7million, the figure quoted when the original transfer was arranged in the summer.

The player is thought to want to stay at Pompey and help their push for a European place "I like it here but the decision on whether I stay is not up to me. It's out of my hands."

"This is a club heading in the right direction. We can finish in the top six and qualify for Europe"

Boss Harry Redknapp knows keeping Pompey up there is a hard job but can is possible, talking to the Sun "I want to keep him, but with or without Fernandes, it is going to be tough for us to hand on in there".

So far Fernandes has shown the kind of quality needed to keep Pompey's push for a European place although so far the terms of his loan and fitness has meant he couldn't hold down the regular place we would expect him to have done, however for £7million he would be a good signing, anything more it may be worth looking elsewhere although at only 20 he would be a player that could grow with Portsmouth.
